Redskins Pull Coup
What a brilliant move by the Redskins today to sign Al Saunders as offensive coordinator. This offseason really reflects the positives and negatives of Daniel Snyder. On one hand, the Redskins don't have their 1st or 4th round draft picks. The constant free agent signings are coming back to bite them, with an avalanche of unmanageable contracts falling upon them. There is no fiscal discipline and a weak overall direction. There is no understanding that in the NFL you need to build through the draft to put together quality players that are affordable. On the other hand, the Redskins now have as star-studded a coaching staff as any team in professional sports. They have a coach with 3 Super Bowls, and a whole host of assistants with experience in higher positions than they now occupy (former HC Joe Bugel, former OC Bill Musgrave, former DC Dale Lindsey, former DC Greg Blache), not to mention one of the best offensive coordinators in football and one of the best defensive coordinators in football. Even if they have to let some key players go, they are going to have some great schemes to work with.

I'm from KC and yes Al Saunders is a great OC and everybody here in KC is calling in talk radio mad because he left. He will defenitly help the Redskins offense but right now I think they need a little more offensive talent for Saunders to make a difference.
I'm not so sure how much more talent the Redskins do need. Their schemes have been weird under Gibbs, but they've got some decent talent. Cooley, Portis and Moss are a really good trio of skill players, and they've got a pretty solid O-Line with Jansen, Samuels, Thomas, Dockery and Radach. The problem is they need one more weapon at receiver, and I don't think they have the money to get it. The buzz in DC is they'll go after Reggie Wayne, but I don't know if they can afford him. I guess we will see.
I agree with a lot of what you say. The Redskins do have some offensive talent but if I was to compare the Redskins offense to the Chiefs I would do it like this.
Santana Moss is much better than our #1 reciever Eddie Kennison.
Portis is very good...Larry Johnson has better potential and was better last season.
The Redskins do have a pretty good offensive line...but you would have to admit the Chiefs offensive line is the best 1 or 2 in the league.
Cooley isn't bad but nowhere near the talent of Gonzalez.
Finally the upgrade I would think the Redskins need the most is at quarterback. The defense is Super Bowl caliber but can Brunell lead them there?
So yes Al Saunders is a good OC...but its all about the players that he had in KC. In todays KC Star Jason Whitlock wrote a column saying that "who made Saunders God's gift to football" and a lot of what he said was true.
But anyways thanks for the debate. I love talking about football and wrestling...two things I know you love as well. Thats why I read your reports on Raw and your blog. Keep up the good work.
