Democratic Debate

I'm watching this Democratic Debate on MSNBC, and the story of this thing is former Senator Mike Gravel. He's crazy! I mean seriously. He's ranting and raving with zany accusations (the "major" candidates would use the nuclear bomb!) and preposterous ideas (the key to getting us out of Iraq is making it a felony to send troops to Iraq!). I take it this guy won't be invited back, but for humor he is gold.

The reality is that guys like Gravel, Kucinich and Dodd are in this to boost up their speaking fees and make it easier to get their next job. Same goes for their GOP equivalents. Former presidential candidate is a pretty impressive title to throw around. Regardless of whether people agree with their positions or not, they're just taking time away from the three people who could be the nominee.

I think there's something to that, but it's also a case, not unusual, of these men having one specific issue to discuss ( the war, or, in Tancredo's case, the illegal immigration fiasco )and wanting to make sure that they get their message out on that. Gravel was amazing...even more so in the interview session after, wherein he showed himself to be half-mad, if not well-meaning. To me, the real stunner of the debate was the sight of Dennis Kuchinich's wife; a beautiful 30-year old British redhead who must be a foot taller than him. And people mock Kucinich?
He won't be the President but, in my book, he's already a winner.

I definitely see the value in bringing in candidates who aren't going to win in order to address topics that wouldn't get brought up otherwise. And hey, I like Kucinich. But presumably these others should have relatively sane, even if minority, positions. Goofballs don't add much, which is what I was amused by with Gravel.

Dean, the link doesn't work for me. What is it of? Saw it was a link to Kucinich's page.
